Ethnic Minorities Chapter
In Hong Kong, second-generation ethnic minorities, particularly those of Nepalese and Filipino descent, often struggle to integrate into the local school curriculum due to foundational weaknesses in Chinese language proficiency. These individuals, born and raised in the city, inherit language barriers from their parents, who primarily speak Nepali, Tagalog, or English at home, limiting exposure to Cantonese (spoken) and written Chinese. As a result, they face significant difficulties in mainstream schools, where Chinese is the dominant medium of instruction for most subjects.
Therefore, Senior Board Member Xuqian Ben Han founded the Ethnic Minorities Chapter with Co-President Xin Ze Li in collaboration with IBEL Hong Kong. We host weekly in-person help sessions, focusing on mathematics, natural sciences and architecture, through tailored tutoring and interactive activities. Conducted in a supportive environment, these sessions aim to enhance students' understanding and engagement with the local curriculum and encourage them to engage in further studies. Volunteers and IBEL staff work together to facilitate learning, helping students build skills and confidence.
